《宝岛一村》讲述了台湾眷村三代住民三个家庭的故事，从第一代人思乡，盼回乡，到第二代人，在台湾出生扎根。60年的情感经历通过三个半小时的戏剧展现出来，仿佛是半个中国的发展史。《宝岛一村》充斥着自然的生活质感和毫不刻意的时代感，三个普通得不能再普通的家庭，操着天津话、北京话、上海话、山东话、闽南话……在神侃与拌嘴中、打闹与相爱中，上演着柴米油盐。200分钟的舞台上没有主角，而是不同的说书人所引领的人生百态，在琐碎中体会嬉笑怒骂，从平凡中感悟跌宕起伏，让观众在悲喜交加中得到一次震撼心灵的戏剧体验。
The Village is a story about three generations of three families in Military Dependents' Villages. The first generation missed their hometown in China while the second generation was born and localized in Taiwan. This 60-year story, in the light of the modern history of China, is shown in this three and a half-hour show.
Wang Weizhong, the godfather of the Taiwanese entertainment industry, grew up in a military dependents' village just like the one in the play. He told Stan Lai over 150 stories about his early lives that eventually merged into the script of The Village. Within these 150 stories, every Chinese can find some to relate to, to laugh, to shed tears for.

Penn Chinese Theater promotes cultural engagement and the preservation of cultural identity through (a) directing plays that encourage creativity and recreation-related to topics in Chinese culture, (b) generating inquiry and learning about Chinese history, and (c) inviting not just people of Chinese heritage but also other cultural groups to learn and engage. In particular, the play we are putting on this semester, “The Village”, explores the pain and joy of a whole generation who moved to Taiwan China from mainland China due to ongoing wars. As a result, we are certainly promoting social sustainability by exploring the topics of adaptation, community development, and history.
